DIY Dobsonian Telescope

Posted by – October 10, 2009

Project:

To build a Dobsonian telescope. Size possibly 10″ maybe twelve. The meteor shower Sept. 14th (Perseids) I viewed with my son has rekindled my fascination with  astronomy and ignited the interest for my son. It was a spectacular meteor we saw the first night the most fasincating single meteor it silently shot across the sky in a blaze of vivid purple haloed by a blue glow leaving a white trail that nearly touched east and west. It had surpassed the aurora borealis I had seen in 1991 in Aldergrove Canada as my personal best heavenly phenomena. The second night of the 15th we witnessed dozens of smaller,  shorter Perseid’s not nearly as awe inspiring as the first, what lacked in quality made of for in quantity though. Onto the telescope project.

We plan to create our own newtonian by hand grinding our own optics and constructing the frame. This will be quite a challenge, yet will provide us a great experience in design, research and time together -
